Announced in 2002, the Winchester Super Short Magnum cartridges are intended to deliver a new level of long-range performance and accuracy to the .223 & .243 family of chamberings. Cartridge overall length is 2.36”, a half-inch shorter than the 2.80” length of existing short-action cartridges. The WSSM’s will be chambered in super short rifle actions, which should improve receiver stiffness and accuracy. The WSSM cartridges do not employ a belt rather, it headspaces on the case shoulder. For efficient and consistent powder burning, it retains the short-fat cartridge case geometry of the WSM line. (Ref. Cartridges of the World 10th edition)
