476 ENFIELD Mk.III

This is the third version of the Enfield series, the others being the Mk. 1 (EB Ref. 457) which was reportedly only manufactured in very small lots in India in the latter part of September 1880 and had a shorter bullet than the Mk. 2 with a modified bullet that was adopted by the British Government in November 1880. The Mk. 3 was the final version adopted in December of 1881. The Mk. 3 can be identified by the bullet shape with the deep cavity closed by a clay wad dipped in wax. The adoption of the 455 WEBLEY cartridge in 1891 lead to all Enfield cartridges being declared obsolete on the 26th of September 1892. (Erlmeier, Brandt Ref. 470)
