8 X 60S MAUSER

The 8×60 with S bullet (.323”) first appeared in the 1928 RWS and 1930 DWM catalogues and it seems therefore that the J (.318”) bullet preceded the S offering, as the smaller diameter loadings were already offered in the 1924 RWS catalogue. After WW1 the possession of military rifles by civilians was prohibited by the 1918 German gun laws. Only the rifle and cartridge was prohibited for civilians however and not the bullet, so the 7,9×57 case was lengthened by 3mm to fall outside the Versailles Treaty. (Dixon Ref W37)
