9 X 57R MAUSER

This is the rimmed version of the 9×57 Mauser described above and was a popular cartridge that was made by various European manufacturers up to the mid 1980’s. It is believed that the rimmed version predates the rimless version although the exact date of introduction is unclear. (Dixon Ref. M37)

[From RSACCA #213 2005/02] – These interesting steel cased 9x57R rounds were made up about 40 years ago by a gunsmith in Johannesburg, Mr. Olekowsky, at the request of a client who had such a rifle and could not find ammo anywhere. They were intentionally loaded with a shotgun primer, with a view to ease of reloading. It is not known exactly how many were made, but not much more than a dozen or so. The original article mentioned that it was a number 6 that was stamped on the base, but I beg to differ and would argue that it was in fact the number 9. A few have their primers secured with a 4 point-stab crimp.
