The 6,5 Grendel dates from around 2002 and was officially launched in 2003, five years before the 6,5 Creedmoor. It is a compact cartridge that was designed to compete with the 5,56 NATO in battle conditions and more specifically to operate from a standard AR15 platform. It is based on the 7,62 AK-47 case and follows in the footsteps of the 6mm PPC with its ‘fat case’ design as opposed to the 5,56 NATO case that gives double the energy at 600 yds. than the NATO round but also provides very good ballistics over ranges up to 300 yds. to make it a good hunting round.
