Developed by Uldarique Marga, who was an official in the Belgian Infantry. He was granted patents during 1899-1902 for an M.88 rifle loosely based on the Dutch Beaumont system. The rifle also had a sliding safety catch at the back of the bolt (not unlike modern shotguns). He was also granted additional patents in 1891 and 1892 for a clip-fed magazine and an improved extractor. These rifles were submitted to the Belgian trials but were not successful. The lead bullet has a double paper patch.
